PolyEdit 的前身是 Crypt Edit，原來的 Crypt Edit 是一套多功能的免費文書處理軟體，操作界面與 MS Word 幾乎一模一樣，功能齊全、支援中文語系，讓您使用起來就像在使用 MS Word 一樣，幾乎是可以取代原有的 MS Word。Crypt Edit 只到 4.x 版，5.0 即改為 PolyEdit 5.0，且不再是免費軟體，而是共享軟體，試用之後，覺得滿意想繼續使用，就必需付費，詳細授權費用，請參見 Order PolyEdit 中有詳細說明。
